Keynote Presentation: Learn from the past, shape the future

Join us on Wednesday, October 14 for an engaging discussion on how our past can help shape a hopeful future. History teacher Mark Flamoe will provide insight into how Jesuit's History curriculum forms students who are critical thinkers and are committed to justice. Alum Chad Cooley ’96 will share how his Jesuit High School education prepared him to not only survive the 9/11 attacks, but to be a man for others in the midst of crisis. ⁠

Mark Flamoe is a 1988 graduate of Bellarmine Preparatory School in Tacoma, Washington. After teaching for several years in Tacoma public schools, he moved to Portland and joined the faculty at Jesuit High School, where he has taught history for the past 25 years. During that time, he has taught nearly every course offered by the History Department and currently teaches Civil Rights and Constitutional Law and AP Comparative Government and Politics.

Jesuit has also been an important part of Mark’s family life, as both of his sons attended Jesuit High School. Teaching runs in the family as well. He is the son of a retired public school teacher, the sibling of a former Bellarmine Prep teacher, the husband of an elementary school principal, and the son-in-law of legendary Jesuit teacher Michael Wendt.

Chad Cooley ‘96 is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of AWH Partners, a national hospitality investment, development, and management firm that has acquired more than $2 billion in hotel real estate since 2010. Before founding AWH, Chad was a Vice President at the New York-based Related Companies. He earned his B.A. in Political Science from Colgate University, where he now serves on the Board of Trustees and received the 2020 Maroon Citation for his service to the university.

A Portland native, Chad considers himself extremely fortunate to have attended Jesuit High School. While at Jesuit, he was an eight-time varsity athlete in track and cross country, and served as captain of both teams.  He was a Eucharistic Minister, member of the Knights, and, as a senior, had the great honor of leading the Winter Junior Encounter.

Chad lives in New York City with his wife and their three children.

On September 11, 2001, Chad was on the 92nd floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Twenty-five years later, he returns to Jesuit to share how the lessons he learned here prepared him not only to survive that day, but to be a man for others in the midst of crisis.
