2022 PORTLAND PLUNGE INFORMATION
After a 2-year hiatus, the Portland Plunge is back! The Portland Plunge is a weeklong in-person opportunity for high school students to learn about houselessness and poverty in Portland. The Plunge is an experience to…
- Listen to the stories of our neighbors living on the margins
- Serve at organizations working for social justice
- See the city in new ways
- Meet new friends
- Step outside your comfort zone
- Experience a simpler lifestyle
- Engage in deep conversation and reflection
The Plunge is a week of intense learning, hard work, and challenging experiences, but it is also full of fun and joy. For most, it becomes a rewarding and exciting experience they carry with them for the rest of their lives.
WHAT: The Plunge is a weeklong service-learning experience facilitated by JOIN designed to provide exposure to high-school students on issues such as houselessness, poverty, barriers preventing people from getting the support they need, and cultural differences. During the week, you will have volunteering opportunities at different agencies across Portland.
WHERE: The Plunge will be coordinated by JOIN in NE Portland. You are responsible for coordinating your own transportation. Students will use public transportation throughout the day to access different service sites; TriMet passes will be provided free of charge. If using public transportation to get to/from the Plunge, please reach out ahead of time to receive those passes beforehand.
WHEN: June 20th to June 25th, 2022. You must commit to the entire week experience. Due to COVID-19 restrictions at JOIN, the Plunge will not be an overnight experience as in previous years; expect to be there from 8:00-5:00/6:00 from Monday through Saturday.
WHAT’S THE COST: There is no cost for this program, but personally it will be the price of a week of intense learning and confronting tough issues. If individuals would like to make a donation to support the Plunge and other JOIN programming, please make checks payable to JOIN.
SAFETY: Participants will be required to be fully vaccinated (2 shots of a COVID vaccine) and will be asked to wear masks, for the safety of each other and for vulnerable members of our community that we may interact with. Additionally, a qualified staff will ensure a safe and meaningful Plunge experience.
APPLICATION: Four things are needed for a complete application: 1) a permission slip signed by you and your parents; 2) the application itself; 3) proof of full vaccination (2 COVID shots); and 4) ONE recommendation filled out by an adult such as a teacher, coach, mentor, youth minister, etc. Recommendations filled out by relatives will not be accepted. Please submit the application materials and references (or have your references submit their recommendations directly) to Andrew Magel at the email address immersion@joinpdx.org by May 15, 2022.
QUESTIONS?: Please email Andrew at immersion@joinpdx.org or text/call at 971-930-3518.

We believe it is in the best interest of students to have guidance and supervision from Jesuit High School faculty/staff on international trips. Jesuit-sponsored trips are intentionally framed within the five pillars of our immersion program: Service, Solidarity, Simplicity, Spirituality, and Social Justice. Students who choose to participate in "open" immersion trips will also need to complete a different approved project in order to fulfill the junior/senior Christian Service requirement.

L'Arche Tahoma Hope
L’Arche Tahoma Hope is a member of the International Federation of L’Arche. The first L’Arche community was started in 1964 in Trosly-Breuil, a village north of Paris, France. It began in much the same way that L’Arche Tahoma Hope did – in response to the need for companionship of two people with intellectual disabilities. Out of this single response has grown a Federation that is made up of over 135 communities in 36 countries throughout the world.
The L’Arche Tahoma Hope community includes four homes, a workshop, a large working farm, and a welcome center. During this Monday through Saturday immersion, JHS students have an experience of living in an intentional community and building relationships by working side by side with members of the community -- with and without disabilities.

Portland Plunge
The Portland Plunge did not take place in summer 2023. We are unsure if it will be offered in 2024.
The Plunge is a weeklong service-learning experience facilitated by JOIN that is designed to provide high school students exposure to issues such as houselessness, poverty, barriers preventing people from getting the support they need, and cultural differences. During the week, students have volunteer experiences working with agencies such as St. Francis Dining Hall, Blanchet House, and many others. Student participants stay in a facility in Northeast Portland with 25 other youth and an adult staff. The emphasis of this intentional community will be reflection, discussion, simple living, service, and recreation. A qualified staff will assure a safe and meaningful experience. Please visit the JOIN website for up-to-date information.
WHEN: The Plunge has been on hold during the last few years with the COVID pandemic and staffing challenges.
WHAT’S THE COST: There is no cost for this program, but personally it will be the price of a week of intense learning and confronting tough issues. If individuals would like to make a donation to support the Plunge and other JOIN programming, please make checks payable to JOIN.
APPLICATION: TBA

Catholic Charities of Oregon
Catholic Charities of Oregon

The services we provide across the state of Oregon include affordable and supportive housing, financial empowerment, mental health & counseling, pregnancy and parenting support, legal services, intensive case management, refugee resettlement, and more."
Many volunteer opportunities require a minimum age of 18 years old; however, there are sometimes youth volunteer opportunities available. Check the Catholic Charities of Oregon website for most up to date opportunities!
If you have questions about volunteering at Catholic Charities of Oregon, email volunteer@ccoregon.org or call the Volunteer Helpline at (503) 688-2536.
Due to the volume of interested volunteers, we have temporarily closed opportunities with our Refugee Services Team. Thank you for your patience as we catch up with the influx of current registrants. We hope to reopen these opportunities as soon as possible.
"201 Club" Info
Although some of these volunteer opportunities may not meet guidelines for one of the three required Christian Service Projects, students may apply this volunteer work towards 201 Club. Jesuit's 201 Club is not a club that meets; rather, it is a recognition of students who have completed over 200 hours of service between the end of sophomore year and May of their senior year. It is called "201" because it represents an ongoing commitment to service -- a commitment to relationships with people who are marginalized. In order to be recognized as members of the 201 Club, students must record their hours with the Arrupe Center for Justice.
