We are excited to announce that author Debby Irving will be at Jesuit on the evening of Monday, June 3, from 5-7 pm—and you are invited! The topic of Ms. Irving's presentation that night is "I'm a Good Person! Isn't That Enough?" This evening is intended for parents, educators, and all adults interested in understanding and improving relationships in a racially diverse world.
As a colleague and neighbor, Debby worried about offending people she wanted to befriend. As an arts administrator, she didn't understand why her diversity efforts lacked traction. As a teacher, she found her best efforts to reach out to students and families of color left her wondering what she was missing. Then, in 2009, one "aha!" moment launched an adventure of discovery and insight that drastically shifted Debby's worldview and upended her life plan.
In light of the Society of Jesus' long-standing call to inter-racial dialogue, reinforced by the Bishops' letter this year, we selected Debby Irving's Waking Up White for our JHS faculty book group and JHS Parent Advisory Board (PAB). Irving shares deeply personal stories about her experiences as a white educator coming to a deeper understanding of the impact of systemic racism in her own life. Our faculty book group and the PAB found Irving's memoir illuminating, inspiring, and eye-opening.
Come hear Debby's story. Her presentation will be in Jesuit's Moyer Theatre from 5-7, and will include a Q&A with Ms. Irving, followed by a book signing for those interested.
