From academics to music to athletics and more, our students (and faculty!) continue to excel in a wide array of activities and events. We are proud to recognize and share these outstanding accomplishments in a Super Sader Shoutout:

Oregon Music Education Association All-State
Three Jesuit students achieved all-state honors for their virtual musical performances. Ethan Strong '24, French horn, was selected for the All-State Wind Ensemble, Chris Jeong '22, violin was selected for the All-State Symphony Orchestra, and Charlene de la Paz, trumpet, was selected for the All-State Symphonic Band. Bravo!

One Health Hackathon Winners
Two Jesuit teams tied for first place among over 70 teams in the Ebola Category of the One Health Hackathon in October. This competition approaches epidemiology problems whilst considering human, animal, and environmental health. Congratulations to students Rishabh Sharma '22, Dev Udata '22, Sam Shrimali '23, Alan Ma '23, Aditi Gupta '23 and Namrata Venkatesan '23 for this major achievement!

Ishan Ahluwalia '24 – Virtual Broadcom MASTERS Finalist
Ishan was selected as one of only 30 finalists at the national Virtual Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology, and Engineering for Rising Stars) Competition in October. At the competition he presented his project, A Real-Time System for Detecting Tire-Road Friction in Different Weather Conditions Using Dynamic Time Warping, and competed in science and engineering activities designed to evaluate student abilities in critical thinking and problem-solving. Great work, Ishan!

Dr. John Gorman – Outstanding Educator Award
Mathematics teacher Dr. John Gorman was selected by the University of Chicago for an Outstanding Educator Award. Dr. Gorman was nominated by a member of the JHS Class of 2020 for his guidance and passion as a teacher and mentor. Congratulations, Dr. Gorman!

Kanthi Karumbunathan '22 - International Neuroethics Society's Essay Competition
Kanthi's essay, An Examination of the Risks and Benefits of Moral Neuroenhancement, placed in the top ten for High School essays in the International Neuroethics Society's Essay Competition and will be featured in the December edition of the International Youth Neuroscience Association Magazine. Way to go, Kanthi!

Cambell McMillan '23 – USA Artistic Swimming Member of the Month
Cambell, a synchronized swimmer, was selected as USA Artistic Swimming's October Member of the Month for her efforts to help younger swimmers continue to learn and practice during while pools are closed. Great work, Cambell!

Alexandra Reynaud '22 – 2019-20 Writers in the Schools
Alexandra was invited to read one of her poems for the Writers in the Schools livestream during the Portland Book Festival this November. Her poem will also be published in the 2019-20 Writers in the Schools Anthology entitled The Seeds to Plant the Future. Well done, Alexandra!

Samyak Shrimali '23 - The Power of Children Symposium Facilitator: Equipping Youth for Service and Social Action
Sam was invited to be a youth facilitator for at the National Power of Children Symposium 2020 this November. During his two sessions, he spoke about finding your purpose and about "failing forward" by reimagining and having a growth mindset. Earlier this year, Sam was honored as one of only six students to win the National Power of Children Award. Great job, Sam!

Nick Simons '22 – US Open Swimming Championships
Nick's race times in both the 100m and 200m Backstroke at the US Open Swimming Championships this November earned him spots to compete in the Olympic Trials next June. With this outstanding performance at the US Open, Nick is currently ranked in the Top 50 in the world, all ages, for backstroke! Awesome achievement, Nick!

National Merit Commended Students
This year, ten Jesuit students were honored as Semi-Finalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program. 17 additional students were honored as Commended Students. All these students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students in the PSAT/NMSQT. We are so proud of all of you!
