Jesuit Seniors Launch Nonprofit to Provide Clean Air Solutions Amid Oregon Wildfires

Two Jesuit High School seniors are addressing a pressing health threat facing Oregon communities: wildfire smoke.

Sohan Govindaraju ‘26 and Shriya Marla ‘26 recently launched BetAIR, a nonprofit dedicated to providing affordable, DIY air filter boxes to at-risk households.

Wildfires in Oregon continue to pose health risks, and vulnerable populations—particularly children, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions—are among the hardest hit by smoke pollution. BetAIR is tackling this crisis head-on by distributing Corsi-Rosenthal boxes, an inexpensive air filtration system, and by educating communities about the dangers of poor air quality.

“BetAIR is committed to helping anyone in our community have access to clean air. Through our smart technology we utilize energy-efficient practices to be proactive rather than reactive with reducing pollutants in our airways,” said Sohan.

Backed by a grant from the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Urban & Community Forestry unit, Sohan and Shriya have already reached more than 300 students in local schools through educational visits. Their outreach has expanded to East Multnomah County, Downtown Portland, and beyond, with the goal of reaching low-income neighborhoods that disproportionately experience the effects of wildfire smoke.

Scott Altenhoff, Urban & Community Forestry Program Manager, praised the project for its innovation and community-centered approach to solving a critical public health problem.

The students hope to inspire similar efforts beyond Oregon as wildfire risks rise nationwide.

“BetAIR is at the intersection of health care and environmental engineering. With a focus on preventing pollutant-induced respiratory illness, educating youth, and advocating with community partners, we aim to utilize various approaches to address the issues with poor air quality,” said Shriya.

“Sohan and Shriya saw a real need in their community and stepped up,” said Jesuit High School Principal Khalid Maxie. “BetAIR shows how Jesuit students use their talents to serve others and make a difference where it matters most.”
