International Women's Day 2023

International Women's Day 2023

Yesterday was International Women’s Day — a time to celebrate, recognize and honor the achievements of women from the past, present and future. International Women’s Day began in Soviet Russia in 1917, where it was established as a national holiday on March 8 after women achieved suffrage. The holiday was adopted by the United Nations in 1977 and became a globally-recognized celebration. The 2023 theme for International Women’s Day is #EmbraceEquity. International Women’s Day 2023 aims to educate on the difference between “equity” and “equality,” and why “equal opportunities are no longer enough.”

This year, to celebrate International Women’s Day at Jesuit, female-led student clubs gathered in the Smith Gym during FLEX to present on topics of women’s empowerment and equity. Students had the opportunity to travel around the different tables to learn about important issues that affect women, create crafts related to affirmation and empowerment, and more. It was a great time to gather, connect, and uplift the voices of our female-led clubs.
