Chess Team Sweeps the Board at State Championship

Jesuit’s JV and varsity chess teams won their respective 6A state championships on February 27-28!  The varsity team not only won the 6A division but also placed first overall for the entire competition, and each member won a first-place board award. This is the team’s fifth state championship since 2021. 

“Both teams’ hard work and commitment to each other led to our success at the 6A State Championships. I am personally proud of our team and to represent Jesuit!” said varsity captain Ishaan Kodarapu ‘27.

Varsity team members include Danny Mamchik ‘27, Trey Tongco ‘28, Ademidun Adebolu ‘28, Hayul Lim ‘29, and Ishaan Kodarapu ‘27. The JV team includes Eesha Juneja ‘29, Mason Sloan ‘27, Aidan Chand ‘27, Neev Kodarapu ‘29, and Henry Mai ‘29. Neev, Eesha, Aiden, and Henry earned first place finishes on their respective boards.

The chess team is coached by Jesuit theology teacher Dr. Russell Fiorella. 

“Dr. Fiorella’s constant support and commitment made it possible for us to compete at the state championship,” said Kodarapu. “We sincerely appreciate his guidance, coaching, and leadership throughout the event.”
