Portland Junior Scientists brings together many Jesuit students to volunteer at local Title One elementary schools and give low-income students the opportunity to learn science outside of school. Through these opportunities, we hope to increase their love for science through fun experiments that will allow them to also develop problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Each week, two senior leaders and other Jesuit students will go to the schools and volunteer for an hour. During this hour, student volunteers can expect to help the elementary school students perform a STEM experiment while also asking questions to increase their understanding and hearing a lot of hypotheses and ideas before ultimately helping the leaders teach the science behind it. Due to the small class sizes for the programs at the elementary schools, we will likely be able to accommodate 2-3 student-volunteers per afternoon. Before the sophomore service due date of December 2nd, there will be 15 possible days for students to volunteer, and students can continue to volunteer for the remainder of the year if they choose to.

Sophomores, you can learn more about this program from student leaders at the Club Fair on September 19th.
