Science Department

Department Philosophy

The JHS Science Department offers courses of study designed to familiarize students with current methods, concepts, and achievements in science. Science is presented as a dynamic process of inquiry, hypothesis, problem-solving, and critical analysis. In presenting its curriculum, the department seeks to achieve the following goals:

To develop the students’ ability to reason analytically and quantitatively;
To involve students in the scientific mode of inquiry: a cycle of reflection, hypothesis, prediction, trial and evaluation;
To acquaint students with the fascinating study of the physical and biological world, and
To promote and assist students’ discovery and pursuit of individual scientific interests.

As a Jesuit work sponsored by the Society of Jesus, we align our curriculum and programs with the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching and the four Universal Apostolic Preferences that guide all Jesuit works. Course Sequence and Placement

JHS requires three years of science, including one year in each of the core sciences — physics, chemistry, and biology — in that order. We believe that a physics-first curriculum allows students to apply their algebra skills immediately and better understand the world around them.

Students who demonstrate a strong understanding of algebraic concepts through their mathematics placement test or challenge test scores may take Physics Honors during freshman year. Otherwise, students spend their freshman year fulfilling their Fine Arts requirements while further developing their math skills, then take Physics or Physics Honors in their sophomore year.

Science-Based Programs

The JHS Science Department understands the importance of providing as many science exposure opportunities for students as possible. We believe that through these opportunities, interest and understanding of science will grow. JHS students currently participate in the following programs:

Robotics: Involvement in robotics allows students to develop technical as well as teamwork and leadership skills. Robotics is coached by math instructor Patty White with the assistance of many mentors from the community. See the Robotics Team Website for more information.
Northwest Science Expo: Students develop projects for the Intel Northwest Science Expo research competition with the support and mentorship of JHS science teachers.
BPA Science Bowl: In this yearly competition sponsored by the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), Jesuit students compete against teams from various schools in a tournament requiring them to answer questions related to all areas of science.
