Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
We hope that you are all safe and healthy on this strange, smoky weekend. Many Jesuit High School families, including faculty and staff, have evacuated their homes or otherwise have had lives disrupted by the wildfires and smoke in our region.
While the air quality in the region is still hazardous, most Jesuit families are no longer facing imminent evacuation orders. In order to continue the momentum of learning, we will therefore have classes tomorrow, Monday, September 14.
As a reminder, we are on a Friday schedule tomorrow. See bell schedule for this week.
I have asked our teachers to be aware that some students and families may still be facing various stressors, including intermittent power outages. If you encounter such difficulties, please remember to email both the appropriate teacher(s) and attendance@jesuitportland.org if the problem results in an absence from a class.
We will be sharing ideas for how the Jesuit community may be able to serve those impacted by the fires later this week, once the extent of the damage is known. In the meantime, if you or someone you know is in need of clothing, food, or shelter, visit this Red Cross website.
Students planning to participate in athletic practices this week: We are canceling all practices for tomorrow, Monday, September 14. Practices the rest of the week will not occur unless the air quality index (AQI) is below 100. Here is up-to-date info.
We expect all students and staff to follow Oregon Health Authority and CDC guidelines regarding physical distancing, hand-washing, and wearing masks. Unfortunately, we have seen reports of students playing for club sports teams without wearing masks, and images of Jesuit students on social media at gatherings where they are clearly NOT following distancing and mask guidelines.
One of the health screening questions we will ask students who come to campus for athletics, campus ministry events, or any other activities, is: "In the past two weeks, have you followed all CDC guidelines, including maintaining six feet of distance and wearing masks when with people not in your family/not in your family's designated safe pod?"
Students who cannot answer yes to all these questions will not be allowed on campus. If a student is untruthful in response to any screening question, therefore putting other students and staff at risk, that student may face disciplinary consequences.
This is a challenging time for all of us, especially our students. Let us rise to that challenge by taking responsibility for our collective health and well-being. We trust that students will do so, and that Jesuit parents will help protect their health and that of our entire community by enforcing CDC health guidelines.
Stay safe, stay healthy, and today, stay indoors.
Sincerely,
