Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
On June 11, the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and Oregon Health Authority (OHA) published reopening requirements for schools in Oregon called Ready Schools, Safe Learners. These requirements apply to Jesuit High School. The document provides a framework for reopening schools in the fall of 2020. This letter is the first in a series of communications as we develop the required "Operational Blueprint," which emphasizes students' academic development; mental, social, physical, and emotional health; instructional schedules and methods; facilities; entry and exit protocols; and family engagement.
For the past three months, Jesuit's leadership team has been planning for three scenarios for 2020-21: Given the requirements of the State of Oregon, the second scenario (hybrid learning) is likely the model Jesuit will operate at the start of school. If we can bring only half the students to campus due to Oregon's physical-distancing requirements, we will organize students by last name to keep families together. Our schedule will continue to offer weekly Mass (likely livestreamed), introduce a homeroom system to build community and promote student wellness, and embed time for faculty professional development. After working through the many details of designing a schedule that can flex between 1-3 above, we plan to share the 2020-21 bell schedule with you by early July.
While we believe that the hybrid approach to learning is currently the best option given our priorities and our constraints, we cannot guarantee that this model will work perfectly or that we can prevent COVID-19 cases within our community. We will respect decisions by parents to keep their students at home for a fully remote learning experience instead of on our campus in the hybrid model.
With this letter, we introduce AMDG 2020: A campaign for resilience in a season of adversity. Living for the greater glory of God, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, is a central tenet of Jesuit education. We urge all members of the Jesuit community to reflect on what it truly means to live AMDG. Please join us in this historic effort!
We deeply value our partnership, rooted in our Jesuit mission. Collaboration and trust will be even more critical in the months ahead as we return to campus, while protecting our students, staff, and the most vulnerable among us.
