The Counseling Department routinely posts articles, reminders for scholarships and college presentations, job/internship opportunities, summer enrichment experiences, and other helpful news on our Jesuit Counseling Twitter page. Visit our website to view our posts, or click here to follow us!

We will also introduce two new hires to the Jesuit High School Counseling Department in fall 2019. We look forward to welcoming them to our community!

Mental Health & Mindfulness

Did you know that consistent physical exercise, in whatever form possible, has been shown to decrease anxiety levels and have a positive impact on mental health?

How physical activity impacts mental health:

  • decreases stress hormones
  • distracts you from negative thoughts and emotions
  • promotes confidence
  • can be a good source of social support
  • provides a buffer against stress

Freshman Parent Workshop

Every year the Counseling Department hosts a series of Freshman Parent Workshops specifically designed to provide information and support to freshman families as they begin the high school journey with their student.

The first Freshman Parent Workshop of the 2019-20 academic year will be Wednesday, September 11. We will discuss the book 13 Things Mentally Strong Parents Don't Do, by Amy Morin. This will be an opportunity to dialogue with other freshman parents on important topics raised in the book and a chance to meet your student's counselor. More information to follow.

"Adulting" (or Life Skills)

Image

Life skills matter and there are certain skills every student should have before they go off to college. Summer is a great time to support your students as they move toward independence. Julie Lythcott-Haims, author of How to Raise an Adult, refers to four steps for teaching your child any skill:

1.     You do it for them

2.     You do it with them

3.     You watch them do it

4.     They do it on their own

Take a look at Lythcott-Haims's list of "8 Skills to Qualify as an Adult" and start thinking about your own list!

After reflecting on what they wish they knew when they went to college, recent Jesuit grads have some recommendations for current students:

  • How credit cards work
  • How to enter into a rental agreement for housing
  • How to access healthcare (make appointments; fill prescriptions; understand when to utilize urgent care, the emergency room, or an advice nurse)
  • How to write a cover letter and create a resume
  • How to change a car tire

Accessing AP Test Scores

Image

In May, many Jesuit students sat for Advanced Placement exams in various subject areas. At the time of test administration, students were reminded that they would receive their AP scores in early July 2019. In order to access their scores, students need to have a College Board account and their 2019 AP number. Click HERE for instructions on how to access scores and other FAQs.

Class of 2019 - Transcript Information

The Counseling Department will submit official final transcripts to seniors' colleges in mid-June. Students should immediately notify Mrs. Hoover if their college plans change.

Did you earn college credit through dual-credit classes at Jesuit or at a college during high school? Be sure to send an official transcript from each college that you received credit from to the college you're attending. Click the links for more information about dual-credit transcript requests from Portland State University and Portland Community College.

Class of 2020 - Questionnaire Instructions

Students are encouraged to complete the Counselor Statement Questionnaire in Naviance Student no later than September 1. This information assists their counselor in writing a recommendation in support of college applications. Find this questionnaire by clicking on About Me > My Surveys.
