Extended Time Testing
Extended Time Testing
Extended-time testing is for students who have been approved via the Learning Support process, and is available before and after school, during a prep period, and during Magis Seminar. (It is NOT available during class periods, even with teacher permission.)
Note: The Charles J. Swindells Counseling Center will no longer proctor exams. All testing accommodations now take place in the Clark Library and Academic Resource Center (CLARC). We require 1 school day notice (Monday through Friday, excluding holidays/weekends) for testing requests. (So if you want to test Wednesday morning, sign up by Tuesday morning. If you want to test Monday after school, request by Friday 2:45). The testing suite is available for use from 7am-5pm on school days. On Tuesday mornings, priority is given to students with extended-time testing accommodations.
- Students wishing to test before school or after school should use the Make-up/Extended Time Testing link.
- Students wishing to use the testing suite during Prep/Magis should email extendedtime@jesuitportland.org
Facility: The testing suite contains individual carrels and provides a reduced-distraction testing environment.
Information for Teachers
We are happy to provide 1.5x extended time accommodations for qualified students in the CLARC testing suite. Remember, all students who qualify for extended time will be noted in PowerSchool/PowerTeacher under LD Status. (Questions about student extended time/LD status should be directed to the Director of the CLARC, Colleen O’Mahony.)
Guidelines for supporting JHS students with testing accommodations:
- At Jesuit, extended time means giving students up to 150% or 1.5x regular test time. So, for a 50-minute test, a student will get 1 hour and 15 minutes. They can take it all at once in the CLARC testing suite, or break a test into two parts (50 minutes in class and 25 minutes before/after school in the CLARC).
- While students are strongly encouraged to contact their teachers about extended time accommodations, faculty are ultimately responsible for making sure they have had contact with each qualifying student before the first test of the year re: testing accommodations to determine student preferences. (CLARC staff will work with extended-time students to emphasize self-advocacy.)
- If a student tells their teacher they want to use extended time on all quizzes and tests for the year, this is sufficient; they do not need to tell their teacher before every test.
- The student has the right to decide if and when they wish to use testing accommodations on regular tests and quizzes. (Students are required to use accommodations for finals.)
- At no time should faculty recommend that the student try testing without accommodations, or ask students to use break, lunch, or flex to test.
- Faculty may set a reasonable time window when a student must make-up a test, in accordance with JHS policies. Please clearly state this in syllabus, and remember that not all students have access to independent transportation to and from school (i.e. Nativity Bus).
- Students are responsible for signing themselves up for extended time testing sessions.
- Teachers will be notified one school day prior to a student signing up for testing. The teacher is responsible for filling out the cover sheet and bringing the test to the Testing Suite located in the CLARC.
- i-Pad tests cannot be actively monitored during the testing process (i.e. looking over a student’s shoulder the entire test). Please proceed accordingly.
- The only time students are allowed to use the testing suite during school hours is during Magis Seminar or prep periods (unless actively taking a test at the same time as the class).
- Students may not miss any class regardless of what is happening in the period for the day, even with teacher’s permission (i.e. study period).
Working with students:
All teachers receive a copy of students' learning profile, with accommodations, before school begins. Teachers and students should discuss testing accommodations in person or over e-mail before first test; in preparation for college, we strongly encourage students to reach out to their teachers and initiate that conversation. If they do not, however, teachers are asked to contact students with accommodations prior to first test.
Teachers willing to provide accommodation(s) in another setting (such as proctoring it themselves) should submit in writing these plans to Chris Orazio, Jesuit’s Testing Coordinator, prior to first test of the year or before 10/1/22. Having a written plan on file protects teachers and students, and makes sure everyone complies with accommodation policies. Questions? See Mr. Orazio or Mrs. O’Mahony.
Information for Students
We are happy to provide 1.5x extended time accommodations for qualified students in the CLARC testing suite. To qualify for extended time accommodations, students must complete a rigorous documentation process. - Students are asked to be self-advocates, and inform their teachers of their testing accommodation preferences over e-mail or in person at least 3 days before the first test of the year. Taking care of it in the first week of school works best.

- Before/after school use sign up genius link
- During school hours, email extendedtime@jesuitportland.org
- The only time students are allowed to use the testing suite during school hours is during Magis, flex, or prep periods, unless using the testing suite during a test of the same subject.
- Students may not miss any class regardless of what is happening in the period for the day (i.e. study period). Please do not ask your teacher or Mr. Orazio for an exception.
- All JHS policies and procedures are in effect when taking a test.
- Failure to follow the process may result in forfeiting reserved testing slot.
- Any student wishing to opt out of extended time accommodations for finals must meet with their counselor and have a letter from their parents agreeing the student can opt out, acknowledging that this means students will not longer qualify for extended time on standardized tests.
- Letter of consent is required even for students who are 18 years of age.
