Working with Women and Children Fleeing Domestic Violence

Placements include working with women and children who are fleeing domestic and/or sexual violence and are now living in shelters. Most volunteers work in the children's programs, though other volunteer opportunities may be available at the shelters or agencies.


Clackamas Women's Services (CWS)

This agency serves women and children who have experienced (or are currently experiencing domestic violence. Their mission is to foster self-empowerment of women and children so they can establish lives free of domestic and sexual violence. Volunteers can assist by working at the shelter or helping with children's programs for kids currently living at the shelter.


Camp Hope America - Oregon

Camp HOPE America - Oregon is a two week-long overnight camp experience and year-long mentorship Pathways Program for children and youth who have experienced family violence. Our program’s focus is on empowering campers through outdoor recreation and adventure activities. Our goal is to offer opportunities for campers to challenge themselves to try new things in order to increase their hope for the future and their ability to believe in themselves and others! During the summer, Camp HOPE holds two sessions of camp: Classic Camp for ages 7-11, and High Adventure Camp for ages 11-15. The Pathways Program takes place throughout the year, with events occurring on weekend afternoons approximately every other month. Join us in creating a community of support, joy, and empowerment for children and youth impacted by trauma.

Raphael House is a non-profit agency that provides shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence. Students will work in a confidential location. Volunteers are often involved with the children's program (reading, playing, arts and crafts).

Rose Haven is a one-stop community and intervention center for women and children experiencing the trauma of abuse and homelessness in Portland, Oregon. Rose Haven promotes self-sufficiency by providing on-site advocacy, informal counseling and referral services that assist women in obtaining housing, medical, and legal services. Volunteers will need to sign a Release Form and if they are 18+, they will also need to complete a background check.


West Women and Children’s Shelter

The Salvation Army West Women’s and Children’s Shelter has been serving victims of domestic violence in the Portland area for over 30 years. Work is primarily in the children's program, spending time with kids and learning about their specific situations.


Volunteers of America-Oregon Parenting Program

This organization offers programs to prevent family violence and promote resiliency, helping vulnerable families to overcome trauma and give their children and youth the best possible start in life. Seniors gain community and enhanced health and well-being. Volunteers often provide care for children while their parents attend parenting classes. Must be 16 years old.
