Working with People with Disabilities

 

The following placements include after school programs, event centered programs, and summer camps. Volunteers have a wide variety of jobs available in working with people with disabilities, all providing opportunities to build relationships.


Bustin' Barriers: Soccer Sundays or Summer Camp

The mission of Bustin' Barriers is to provide safe physical activities and meaningful socialization experiences for individuals experiencing disability -- creating opportunities for participants to have fun and strive toward their personal best. Bustin' Barriers offers several week long day camps (9:00 am - noon) as well as Soccer Sundays and basketball tournaments.

Columbia River Miracle League is a baseball league for children with disabilities. Students are needed to help on Saturdays during the fall from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm. Each student is paired with a player during games.


Every Body Athletics

Every Body Athletics is a small group exercise program for individuals with and without disabilities, an inclusive movement that you’ll want to be a part of! During each session, volunteers without disabilities (teammates) work out alongside our adults with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (athletes), modeling proper techniques and providing encouragement along the way. Teammates also help our athletes exercise their social-emotional skills by facilitating positive interactions among all participants

This wonderful program offers people with developmental or physical disabilities many different athletic opportunities throughout the year. Student volunteers are needed as assistant coaches. Volunteers are expected to attend a coaches meeting (see SOOR web page). Sports and approximate dates include: Aquatics, Bowling, Soccer or Volleyball (Sept - Nov.), Basketball (Nov - Feb.), Skiing (Alpine or Nordic), or Ice Skating (Jan - Mar.), Powerlifting or Gymnastics (Feb - May), Athletics (Track and Field), Tennis (Mar - May), Softball or Golf (June- Aug). Check the online calendar for specific event dates.

(Please note: this placement is in Vancouver!) The WSSB has a long history of empowering children who are blind and visually impaired to become more independent. The school strives to promote activity opportunities that have traditionally not been thought possible for visually impaired students. Volunteers are needed to be sighted guides during recreational activities.
