Principal's Message

Though the Church calendar says we are now in “Ordinary Time,” we know that at Jesuit, there is no such season. Soon, the cycle of the school year will take us from final exams to forecasting to the student fundraiser, from winter sports and activities to spring, from the freshman overnight to the sophomore overnight to the next two Encounters, as we roll on toward Easter…

Parent Social this Saturday, Jan. 24

The annual Parent Social will be held on Saturday, January 24, at the Alex L. Parks Performing Arts Center (at JHS) beginning at 6 pm. All parents are invited to this special evening to meet and socialize with other Jesuit parents and faculty.

Entertainment includes Jesuit's stellar Chamber Choir, Chordless (the men's a cappella group, pictured at left), and the rare opportunity to see stars from the Coffeehouse galaxy!

Musical Tickets on Sale January 24

The JHS Drama Program presents this year’s spectacular musical – Broadway’s Tony Award Winning IN THE HEIGHTS – February 26 through March 8 in the Marilyn Moyer Theatre. This celebration of home and family in our modern times is set to an infectious score infused with contemporary rhythms and rhymes. Diversity Office Update

The Diversity Club, Asian-American Club, Italian-American Club, Legado Latino, Sharing Black Community, Gender Equality Club, and Unity Club have all shown an increase in attendance and participation so far this year. Students enjoy sharing their passion for justice through presentations, brown bags, Friday feasts, volunteering and assemblies. 

We are preparing another fantastic Multicultural Week (March 16-20), highlighted by the Cultural Awareness assembly during which students share their cultural talents through song, instrumental music, and dance.

College Counseling News

Senior College Planning

Most Common Application colleges and a few non-Common Application colleges require a Mid-Year Report that includes the student's seventh semester transcript. Jesuit will automatically send a Mid-Year Report and seventh semester transcript to Common Application colleges. For non-Common Application colleges that require or have requested a Mid-Year Report and/or seventh semester transcript, the student must submit a Mid-Year Report Request Form to the Counseling Center. Seniors have received this form via their student email. The form can also be found by clicking here. Mid-Year Reports and seventh semester transcripts will be sent following the posting of fall semester grades.

Grandparents' Day on Friday, April 17

Grandparents' Day is scheduled for Friday, April 17, 2014. On this day we celebrate the feast of St. Peter Canisius, Jesuit High School’s patron saint.

JUNIOR and FRESHMAN students are welcome to invite their grandparents to campus to celebrate with us (the only exception is if a junior or freshman student(s) has a sophomore or senior sibling. The sophomore or senior sibling can attend the event). We set aside this day to give thanks to grandparents and give them the opportunity to learn more about their grandchild’s experience at Jesuit High School. The morning includes a continental breakfast, Mass and special student performances in the Moyer Theatre.

Christian Service Updates

Junior Parents:  If your child has NOT completed their junior/senior Christian Service project they MUST forecast for Christian Service and Peace/Justice during forecasting in February. Applications for most summer service placements will be available starting Feb. 6 (including all immersion trips). Please contact Scott Powers at 503-291-5463.

Sophomore Parents: Parents of sophomores, your child will participate in an orientation for the junior/senior Christian Service project starting on the first day of semester twoThis two-week program addressed the “how to’s” of the required service junior/senior service project, as well as a basic understanding of social justice and our need to learn from people who are marginalized by society. To wrap up this orientation, there will be a Service Opportunities Fair on campus Friday, Feb. 6, which brings over 20 agency representatives to Jesuit to speak to students about their service work interests. Most applications for summer service camps or projects will be available in the CS office in Lower Arrupe on February 6. Off to the Races! A Night at the Derby. Auction on Saturday, May 2

It is a safe bet to say you won’t want to miss our party on race day, Saturday, May 2, 2015! But as we all know, planning an auction gala involves many details to make it a unique, memorable and fun event. Here are just a few ways you can help create an extraordinary affair:

Become a sponsor. Our tiered sponsorship levels and benefits help underwrite the costs of the Auction and offer public recognition in exchange for a company's or personal donation. In-kind donations are also welcomed. You can view our Sponsorship Opportunities Form here.

Make a donation.  The best auction items are objects, experiences and activities that are not easily found. What distinctive items or packages would you like to see at the Auction this year? Download a donation form by clicking here. The deadline is April 1, so make your contribution soon!

Be a volunteer. This is a great way to interact with other Jesuit parents. If you would like to find out what volunteer opportunities are available, click here. Feel free to attend the Auction Board Meetings scheduled on February 5, March 5, and April 9 at noon in the Bieze Conference Room (DeSmet Business Office).

Ski/Snowboard Club

There is still room for skiers and boarders on the ski bus to Mt. Hood Meadows this winter. Preview Day is Saturday, January 24, 2015. The club will travel to the mountain every Saturday in February. Senior Grad Night Parent Meeting

Senior parents are encouraged to attend the Senior Grad Night parent meeting on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 7 pm in the Moyer Theatre. Parents will receive information on graduation for the Class of 2015, along with sign-up opportunities for volunteering at the Senior Grad Night party. Registration materials and fees for the Grad Night Party will also be discussed. Contact Elaine Forde, Dean of Students and Activities with questions at eforde@jesuitportland.org. Novena of Grace

A Novena is generally a nine day set of prayers turning an issue or a desire over to God with the hope of clarification and consolation. A traditional Novena found in Jesuit parishes and schools is the Novena of Grace to St. Francis Xavier, one of the first Jesuits. At Jesuit High School, we celebrate the Novena with short prayer services during break from Wednesday, March 4, to Thursday, March 12. One can take the prayer card home on the weekend and pray with others who are making the Novena of Grace. As we get closer to the Novena, we will put the times up on our website. All are invited to attend our prayer during this Novena of Grace.

Because this is a Jesuit tradition, St. Ignatius Catholic Church on 43rd and SE Powell also hosts a Novena of Grace. If you want to join them, their dates are March 5-13 and you can find the information on their Novena of Grace at http://www.stignatiusparish.org/novena.

 
   
              
 
 
 

Campus Ministry News

Freshman Overnight Retreat: On Friday, January 16, freshmen received a "what-to-bring" sheet for their retreats on the January 23-25 weekend. We will post this online the following week. If your child hasn't signed up yet and still wants to go, please have him/her contact the Campus Ministry Office quickly—and welcome to night 2.

Sophomore Overnight Retreat: By the end of January, all sophomores should know how to sign up for the Sophomore Overnight Retreat. This weekend has two back-to-back retreats Feb 14-15 and February 15-16. It is President's Day weekend; students also have Tuesday, February 17 off of school--because the faculty and staff are on retreat!

Athletics Information

“Champions are made when no one is watching”

Speed – Agility – Quickness Workouts - Every Tuesday and Thursday from 3-4 pm, Jesuit offers workouts for all interested athletes. Held during the months of January and February on Cronin Field and the Activity Room, this is especially helpful for lacrosse, track and field, baseball, softball, tennis, and football athletes. The first week of January, we had almost 60 athletes per workout. Please encourage your son or daughter to attend these short, beneficial, and free workouts. *These workouts are held from noon to 1 pm on final exam week.

Happy New Year from JHS Security!

Happy New Year from Chief of Security Cathe Kent, and JHS Campus Monitors Laurie, Kyle, Lucas, and Rick.

We rang in the New Year with a new “home” to keep our monitors dry and warm—a security shack near the tennis courts off the 91st Street entrance to campus. This structure will be staffed during school hours by our Campus Monitors to welcome visitors to campus, as well as to assist parents at drop-off and pick-up. Thank you to the Starfish Club for hooking us up with Christmas lights over the holidays!

Annual Student Fundraiser - Fulfilling the Need

Wednesday, February 4th marks the beginning of the 2015 Student Fundraiser. Each year the student body works together one time to raise funds that support our school community. In addition to supporting the annual fund, donations raised through the Student Fundraiser will fulfill the $100,000 commitment made by Student Government ($50,000 in both 2013-14 and 2014-15) to assist students and their families who qualify for financial aid. The remainder of the funds will be voted on and divided between several different projects. Past year’s projects have included the ambassador program, JCTV, Ignatian retreats, student day planners, and more.

Parents will receive a letter at the end of January explaining the Student Fundraiser. There is additional information on the Jesuit website at www.jesuitportland.org/studentfundraiser. If you have questions, please contact Sabrina Blue at 503-291-5402.

Lost and Found!

Parents, has your child misplaced her winter jacket or his favorite water bottle? On Wednesday and Thursday, January 28 and 29, we will put all lost and found items on display in the Knight Center Lobby to give students and parents a chance to look for lost items.
